BULLDOG BASKETBALL

With under two minutes to go in the third quarter Saturday at the Hope Christian Tournament, the Bulldogs and host Huskies were locked in a heated battle, just two points apart. On the line was not only the tournament title but a potentially bigger prize as well: As the fourth- and third-ranked teams in Class 4A, respectively, state seeding implications also surrounded the matchup.
Hope's Diego Gonzalez had just put down a three-pointer to make it 32-30 Bulldogs, but the boys in orange made the final seconds of the third count. A hard drive to the hoop by Charlie Campbell was followed by a two-handed slam from Clay Kincaid after Braylon Vega spotted him wide open on the block. And as the buzzer sounded, Campbell was fouled on a shot from beyond the arc and proceeded to drain all three free throws to give Artesia a 39-30 buffer heading into the final eight minutes of play.
And that's where the Runnin' 'Dogs ran away with it.
The Huskies were able to hang within 10 early, making it 42-32 on a pair from the stripe by Daniel Feist that followed a Campbell breakaway layup off the steal and a Trent Egeland free throw. A drive to the hoop from Campbell and shot in the paint from Egeland were also answered by layups from Lincoln Sneed and Gonzalez. A blocked shot and subsequent steal by Campbell led to yet another layup, and short-range jumpers from Kincaid and Egeland -- both gleaned from offensive rebounds as the 'Dogs dominated the boards on both ends of the court -- gave Artesia a 17-point edge with three minutes to go in the game.
A Dylon Crnkovich three and pair from the line by Gonzalez briefly brought Hope Christian back within 11, 54-43 as the contest fell under two minutes. But as the Huskies began to resort to three-pointers that wouldn't fall, they were forced to foul to slow the clock... and they kept fouling the wrong guy. Campbell went 6-6 from the stripe in the final 1:39 of play -- and Cael Houghtaling 1-2 in his lone trip -- to help the Bulldogs pull well away for the championship win, 61-45.
Campbell led the charge for Artesia in the bout with a game-high 30 points, followed by Egeland with 16.
It was the second of two statement-making 4A wins for the 'Dogs on the weekend, coming on the heels of a 70-62 thriller over second-ranked St. Pius in Friday's winners' bracket semifinals.
After battling to a 19-19 draw in the first quarter against the hot three-point-handed Sartans, the Bulldogs stayed consistent offensively while stepping it up on defense in the second. Vega kicked off that period with a trey, and a 6-0 run that included buckets from Campbell, Egeland and Vega made it 30-21 midway through. Pius was able to make it a four-point game on a late three, but a shot off the glass in the final seconds of the half by Jack Byers made it 38-32 Artesia.
The Bulldogs again outplayed the Sartans in the third, with an early jumper and both modern and old-fashioned three-point plays by Vega giving Artesia its biggest lead of the night, 46-39. Campbell, Kincaid, Steven Williams and Corbyn Dominguez then stepped up to contribute buckets to send Artesia into the fourth with what turned out to be a vital 11-point lead, 54-43.
St. Pius was able to cut their deficit to five in the opening minutes of the fourth, fended off by an Egeland and-one and breakaway layup from Campbell. They'd do it again with 35 seconds to go on a Josh Darling three. But more clutch free throws in the final seconds from Artesia -- 4-4 by Campbell and 2-2 from Houghtaling -- allowed the 'Dogs to secure the eight-point win, 70-62.
Campbell finished that outing with a game-high 20, while Egeland added 15, Kincaid 12 and Vega 11. Campbell -- who finished the tournament with a whopping 72 points -- was also high point in Artesia's opener Thursday against Class 3A fifth-ranked West Las Vegas, posting 22 to tie with Vega in the 'Dogs' 79-47 win. He and Vega subsequently joined Egeland and Kincaid on the All-Tournament Team.
With the trio of wins, the Runnin' 'Dogs improved to 12-5 on the season. They'll now join the Lady Bulldogs in hosting Roswell High Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Bulldog Pit, with the girls tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m. Come out and support your AHS basketball teams! LADY BULLDOG BASKETBALL
PICTURED: Jenna Whitmire accepts her All-Tournament Team award as her teammates applaud Saturday at the Hope Christian Tournament in Albuquerque.
Having posted just six points in the opening quarter, and with double-digit turnovers holding their offensive opportunities hostage, the Lady Bulldog basketball team trailed host Hope Christian 30-19 at the half Saturday in the Hope Christian Tournament's third-place game. Frustration could have set in at that point. But the Lady 'Dogs aren't the type of team to let anything get them down.
Artesia needed a solid defensive effort to limit the Lady Huskies and give themselves a chance. They delivered that in the third quarter, holding Hope to just six points while doubling up on them on five points from Jenna Whitmire, four from Kailee Padilla, and a Hattie Harrison three. That sent the Lady 'Dogs into the fourth down by just five, 36-31.
Two buckets and a pair of free throws from Whitmire and a Padilla jumper made it a one-shot game, and with a Harrison basket in the paint and a layup from Padilla, the Lady 'Dogs had tied things up, 43-43, with 1:51 still to go. The Artesia girls were able to get a turnover but missed the subsequent shot, and with 1:30 on the clock, Padilla fouled out of the game. Hope Christian's Louisa Landavazo sank the ensuing free throws but missed two more following a three-second call on Artesia, and with 29 seconds remaining, Whitmire was fouled on a drive to the basket and converted the and-one to give the Lady Bulldogs a 46-45 lead.
It had been a thrilling comeback effort, and when the Huskies missed a shot attempt at the 19-second mark, it looked as though the Lady Bulldogs might be able to run out the clock on it. But Artesia knocked the ball out of bounds as the game fell under 10 seconds, and Hope Christian was able to find Adalynn Day open in the paint for the go-ahead basket with five seconds left. One final turnover ended it for the Lady Bulldogs, 47-46.
The fourth-place finish was a solid end to the tourney for the girls in orange, who had opened Thursday with a hard-fought win over 4A Bloomfield. Artesia managed just seven points in the first quarter of that contest but came barreling back with 16 in the second -- six from Avery Frederick, four from Whitmire, and two each from Ashton Craft, Padilla and Nylah Archie -- to lead 23-14 at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to bump their advantage to 13 in the third, 38-25, with help from eight unanswered in the final seconds by Harrison, Whitmire, Padilla and Brookelyn Thacker. The Lady 'Dogs maintained that margin through the first half of the fourth quarter, but a late 12-1 rally by the Lady Bobcats had Bloomfield within one, 46-45, with just over a minute to play. A drive to the hoop by Thacker made it 48-45, however, and Artesia was able to hold the 'Cats scoreless through the final 52 seconds while getting a 1-2 showing from the line apiece from Padilla, Frederick and Whitmire to round out the 51-45 final.
The Lady 'Dogs ran into a hot Class 5A No. 7 Los Lunas team in the semifinals and were never able to get anything going offensively, trailing 22-4 at the half before falling to the Lady Tigers by a final of 49-17.
The Artesia girls returned home with a record of 8-9 and will join the Bulldogs Tuesday, Jan. 21, in hosting Class 5A Roswell High at Bulldog Pit, tipping off at 5:30 p.m. prior to the boys' game at 7 p.m. Get your tickets now and support AHS basketball!

She'd come up just short of Albuquerque High's Vanessa Ramos in the first-place bout, however, on a technical fall (20-4) at 5:47.
